X Just Rebuilt Its Ad Platform From Scratch — AI Is the Whole Point

Elon Musk’s X is making another run at winning back advertisers. This time, it’s with a fully rebuilt ad platform that started rolling out Thursday, and AI is at the core of it.

Let’s be honest — X’s ad business has had a rough few years. After Musk took over, revenue cratered. The company pivoted hard to subscriptions and AI experiments just to keep the lights on. But according to eMarketer, things are finally turning around: estimated ad revenue hit $2.26 billion in 2025, and they’re projecting $2.46 billion in 2026. That’s still half of what Twitter pulled in back in 2021, but at least the trajectory is pointing up again.

Now X wants to accelerate that recovery with a new ad platform that, by their own description, features more modern “retrieval and ranking systems” powered by AI. The pitch is that marketers will find it easier to build targeted campaigns and maintain control, while AI handles the heavy lifting — better placements, more relevant targeting, and improved results.

Monique Pintarelli, head of global advertising at xAI, called it “bold, fast, and focused on building something substantially better for advertisers.” She also promised a smooth rollout of continuous improvements and new features. That’s a lot of pressure to live up to, especially given the history here.

It’s no surprise that rebuilding the ad platform became a priority after X merged with xAI last year. AI-driven ad systems are the new normal — just look at Google and Meta this earnings season. Both companies are riding what The New York Times called a “digital ad boom,” with AI automating everything from ad creation to targeting to measurement. Smaller businesses are now getting access to tools that used to be reserved for the big players.

X is late to this party, but they’re finally showing up with something that sounds genuinely competitive. Whether the execution matches the ambition is the open question. I’ve seen plenty of “rebuilds” that were really just refactors with a new coat of paint. If this is the real deal — a ground-up rewrite with AI baked in — then X might actually have a shot at clawing back some of that lost ad revenue.

I’ll be watching the rollout closely. The early adopters will tell us everything.
